Top 5 and Refelction

Writing this post about the top 5 was a wonderful way for me to reflect on my learning style and my learning this semester. I truly feel that with this class what you put in is what you get out, and interacting with all of you week after week on blogs made me feel connected to fellow education majors on campus even if we never met in person. I think the variety of strategies for learning helped keep this class fresh and interesting even when we were discussing heavy and difficult topics related to our future careers.

I enjoyed most of the one pager assignment, this helped me process my thoughts and feelings without the rigid structure of a traditional academic paper, freeing me to worry about content and clarity over format. I think this was helpful when I needed to process quite a bit of new information for this class, such as when we read the YA novels. Since I was putting myself in the life of someone with different identities I appreciated the space to simply write out my thoughts.

I also enjoyed the poetry aspects of this class, as stated in my poster I am not often one for writing poetry, so this was difficult at first. As time went on I found myself enjoying it immensely as I was sort of forced to slow down and appreciate the writing style of the authors instead of simply reading for content. Making poetry out of the text we read helped me view it as more than a simple article, but as a true passion project from the author.

Overall I have truly enjoyed this class and interacting with all of you every week! Have a great summer!

  1. Mallory, I love seeing the top 5 authentic teaching practices & strategies you chose as favorites! I, too, chose reading and writing poetry to express ideas as one of my top 5. The Golden Lines poem was my favorite of those. And I agree that we get from this class the same value as the effort we put into it. The blogging was a very new endeavor for me. Though I read a lot of blogs, the blogging assignments made me realize how little I ever interacted with the writers. I believe that part of the beauty of blogging is the interaction the author gets to have with their audience. It creates connection and inspires a greater sense of community, even in the presence of differing opinions. Even though I had assignments I preferred over others, they all helped me see understand and evaluate the lesson, so I could apply them to my future in teaching.
